Architects have been left out of the latest wave of architectural design reforms that could reshape architecture and the profession.
“We are being let down by our own profession,” said Lisa Tuckler, president of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
The latest changes, which were introduced last year, allow architects to be hired without being formally trained as architects and require that all of their designs be “design-based.” “
I think that’s what’s happening.”
The latest changes, which were introduced last year, allow architects to be hired without being formally trained as architects and require that all of their designs be “design-based.”
It means they must be built from scratch and can’t rely on previous work to make decisions.
Tuckler said that, since the reforms, more and more buildings are being built using design-based approaches.
She said there are now 2,500 buildings in the country that are based on a design-driven architecture process.
Tucker said she’s heard from architects who are worried that they’ll lose their jobs and said that there is a need for more of an open discussion about how design is becoming a part of architecture.
She wants to see more architects involved in the process.
“The way that architecture is being developed in this country is being dictated by the industry,” she said.
“If the profession had more architects that are building and designing buildings in ways that aren’t just based on traditional approaches, that arent just building from scratch, that are designing from the ground up, that have a more design-centric approach to building, then that would create a more diverse profession.”
The new requirements also force some of the most influential architects of the past, including Robert Moses and George Foster Peabody, to rethink their own approach to architecture.TUCKLER said she believes that if the profession wants to remain relevant, it needs to continue to work with the architectural profession on issues of design, and that means educating architects on the current state of the profession and how it is changing.
“A lot of architects feel that they have an ‘old’ approach to design, that they havent been able to evolve,” she explained.
“We need to start again.”
